About Abhayarishta

Abhayarishta, named after abhaya (another name for haritaki), is a classical arishta documented in Bhaishajya Ratnavali. It combines haritaki as the chief ingredient with vidanga, madhuka, draksha, gokshura, munakka and other herbs fermented with jaggery.

The formulation of choice for anaha (chronic constipation), arshas (hemorrhoids), adhmana (abdominal distension) and gulma (abdominal mass). Unlike stimulant laxatives, haritaki's tridoshic action gently re-trains bowel motility without dependency. Gokshura and vidanga in the formula simultaneously address anal pruritus and hemorrhoidal congestion.

Among the safest arishtas for long-term use — traditionally prescribed in 1–2 month cycles for habitual constipation and chronic piles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Abhayarishta safe for daily use?

Yes — among the safest classical laxative-arishtas for 1–3 month cycles. It does not cause habit-formation unlike senna-based laxatives.

Abhayarishta vs Triphala churna for constipation?

Both work. Abhayarishta acts faster (overnight), is gentler on the gut, and is better for elderly with arshas. Triphala churna is better for daily rasayana + bowel regulation over months.

Does it cause dependency?

No. Haritaki re-trains peristalsis rather than stimulating it. Dose can typically be tapered after 6–8 weeks.

Is it good for piles?

Yes — classical arshoghna indication. Usually combined with local application (Kasisadi taila) and dietary changes.
