About Ashwagandharishta

Ashwagandharishta is a classical self-fermented Ayurvedic liquid (arishta) featuring Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) as the chief ingredient. Documented in Bhaishajya Ratnavali, it is traditionally prescribed for unmada (anxiety/psychiatric disorders), apasmara (seizure disorders — only adjunct), insomnia, sexual debility, and general nervous exhaustion.

The fermentation process (1–3 months with dhataki pushpa as the natural starter) converts the herbs into a self-preserving medicated wine of roughly 5–10% ABV. This process extracts both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble constituents, and many practitioners consider arishtas more bioavailable than churnas for nervous-system indications.

Because of its natural alcohol content, ashwagandharishta falls under Schedule E(1) in India and requires appropriate prescription handling. It is typically dosed 15–30 ml mixed with equal water, twice daily after meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ashwagandharishta contain alcohol?

Yes — 5–10% ABV from natural fermentation. It is classified as Schedule E(1) and dispensed with prescription guidance. Typical 15 ml dose with equal water contains less alcohol than half a glass of wine.

Ashwagandharishta vs ashwagandha churna — which is better?

Different use cases. Churna (powder) is preferred for athletic performance, daily tonic use. Arishta is traditionally preferred for anxiety, insomnia, convalescence — the fermentation enhances CNS bioavailability.

How long until it works?

Sleep effects may be noticed within 7–14 days. Deeper nervine tonic effects (rasayana) typically require 6–8 weeks of regular use.

Can I drive after taking it?

Wait at least 2 hours after a 15 ml dose. Do not combine with any other alcohol or CNS depressant that same day.

Is it addictive?

At classical doses, there is no documented dependency profile, but anyone with a history of alcohol use disorder should use ashwagandha churna or tablets instead.
