About Punarnavasava
Punarnavasava, documented in Bhaishajya Ratnavali, is a classical asava built around punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) — a famed mutrala (diuretic) and rejuvenator whose Sanskrit name means "that which renews." Combined with kutki, chitraka, pippali, musta, haritaki and bibhitaki fermented in jaggery.
Traditionally the first-line Ayurvedic formulation for shopha (edema) and udara-roga (ascites). Clinically used alongside diuretic therapy for cardiac, renal and hepatic edema — though never as a substitute. Also indicated in yakrit-vikara (liver disorders), pleehodara (splenomegaly) and chronic anemia with edema.
Faster-absorbed than equivalent churna preparations and preferred when digestive fire is low. Does not cause electrolyte derangement characteristic of pharmaceutical diuretics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take it for kidney disease?
Only under supervision. Punarnava is classically mutrala and hepato-renal supportive. For CKD or dialysis patients, use strictly under a Chikitsak and nephrologist coordinating care.
Will it replace my diuretic?
No. It is adjunctive. Your pharmaceutical diuretic should not be discontinued without medical review.
How long until edema reduces?
Mild edema often improves within 2–4 weeks. Chronic or organ-related edema requires longer courses under supervision.
Can diabetics take it?
Contains jaggery. Sugar-free versions exist. Check labeling and glucose trends.
