About Giloy Juice
Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), called "amrita" (the nectar of immortality) in Ayurvedic texts, is among the most-studied Ayurvedic immunomodulators. Its stem juice — prepared fresh or as a stable liquid extract — is the simplest and most bioavailable form.
Classical texts indicate giloy for jirna jwara (chronic fever), daha (burning sensations), prameha (diabetes spectrum), pandu (anaemia-type conditions) and as a primary rasayana. Modern research has documented T-cell activation, NK-cell activity, hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects.
Giloy became widely known during the COVID-19 period, when the Indian Ministry of AYUSH included it in their recommended self-care protocols. It is one of the few Ayurvedic herbs with pharmacokinetic studies across multiple dosage forms, and fresh stem juice is considered most potent when available.

Preparation Method
Fresh mature guduchi stems (brownish with green pith) are washed, crushed, and the juice extracted with minimal water. Commercial preparations are pasteurized and may include small amounts of citric acid as natural preservative. Freshest product (within 48 hours of extraction) retains maximum alkaloid content.
Traditional Uses
Immunity support
Classical rasayana and modern-researched immunomodulator.
Fever recovery
Traditional indication for jirna jwara (post-viral chronic fever states).
Liver support
Documented hepatoprotective activity; traditional kamala (jaundice) indication.
Diabetes support
Traditional prameha indication; modern research on insulin-sensitizing activity.
Skin conditions
Traditionally used for kushtha (chronic skin disorders) and rakta-dushti (blood-purification).
Joint support
Amavata (rheumatoid-type) traditional indications.
Dosage Guidelines
| Form | Amount | Timing |

Anupana (Recommended Carriers)
- Equal water — Standard dilution
- Honey (after cooling) — Post-viral recovery, kapha balance
- Rock sugar water — Pitta excess, burning sensations
Contraindications & Interactions
Avoid or use with caution in:
- Autoimmune conditions (giloy stimulates immune activity — consult Chikitsak before use)
- Pregnancy (insufficient safety data — avoid)
- Scheduled surgery (discontinue 2 weeks prior — possible glucose effects)
- Immunosuppressant medication (interferes with therapy)
Drug interactions:
- Immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, methotrexate) — may counteract therapy
- Antidiabetic medications — monitor glucose, possible additive effect
- Anticoagulants — theoretical; monitor
Rare reports of drug-induced liver injury with long-term high-dose giloy in 2020–2021 literature; these are debated and may relate to mis-identification with related species. Source only from reputable AYUSH-licensed producers, and limit continuous use to 3 months followed by review.
Frequently Asked Questions
Giloy juice vs tablet — which is better?
Fresh juice (used within 48h) is most bioavailable but least convenient. Standardized tablets/capsules give consistent dosing and shelf life. For acute fever-recovery use, juice. For daily rasayana use, tablets are practical.
Is giloy safe long-term?
Most traditional texts support long-term use. However, post-2020 pharmacovigilance raised questions about very-long-term high-dose use. A prudent protocol is 2–3 months on, 2–4 weeks off.
Giloy for COVID recovery — does it help?
Ministry of AYUSH included giloy in its recommended self-care protocol during 2020–2022. Modest supporting evidence exists for symptom duration and immune markers. It is not a treatment — seek medical care for active COVID.
Can diabetics take giloy?
Traditionally used for prameha (diabetes spectrum). Often used alongside modern diabetes care, but monitor glucose — additive effects possible.
Any liver safety concerns?
Ensure the product is from an AYUSH-licensed manufacturer with proper botanical verification. Avoid if you have pre-existing liver disease. Discontinue if unexplained nausea/jaundice develops.
