Bhringraj ("king of hair") oil is the single most prescribed Ayurvedic hair oil. It combines Eclipta alba with amla, brahmi, shatavari and bala in a sesame or coconut oil base. Documented across classical texts including Charaka Samhita and multiple nighantus as the premier keshya (hair-benefiting) dravya.

Classical indications include khalitya (hair fall), palitya (premature greying), scalp dryness, and interestingly — anidra (insomnia). Traditional practice applies bhringraj oil to scalp before sleep, with many texts describing its nidra-daayaka (sleep-inducing) effect via pada-abhyanga and scalp application.
