About Murivenna
Murivenna is a classical Kerala formulation — documented in Sahasrayoga — specifically designed for trauma, sprains, dislocations, muscle strains, and post-fracture care. Built on coconut oil with fresh juices of onion (palandu), garlic (lashuna), yellow amaranth, karpuravalli, and bile extract.
Unlike Mahanarayan (chronic osteoarthritis) or Dhanwantaram (generalized vata), Murivenna is acute-trauma focused. The Sanskrit name itself — "muri" (break/trauma) + "venna" (oil) — reflects its sole indication.
Used by Kalaripayattu (traditional Kerala martial art) practitioners for centuries for sports injuries. Rapidly reduces swelling, hematoma, and soft-tissue trauma. Standard oil in Kerala orthopedic clinics (marma-chikitsa).

Preparation Method
Herbal fresh juices + coconut oil cooked by classical taila-paka method until oil absorbs the active principles.
Traditional Uses
Sprains, dislocations
Acute ligament/joint trauma.
Post-fracture care
Hematoma reduction, soft-tissue healing around cast.
Sports injuries
Muscle strains, hamstring tears, tendinopathy.
Post-surgical bruising
Localized application around incision (not on wound).
Traumatic joint pain
Acute painful swollen joints post-injury.
How to Use
Apply
Gentle application around injury site (not on open wound).
Bandage
Light bandaging with cotton helps retain oil.
Heat
Warm compress over applied oil enhances penetration (after 48h acute phase).
Contraindications & Cautions
- Open wounds (use Jatyadi Taila instead)
- Known garlic/onion sensitivity
- Skin infections
Practical cautions:
- Strong smell (onion/garlic) — apply in ventilated space
- Stains fabric — use old cloth bandaging
- Not a substitute for medical fracture assessment
Frequently Asked Questions
Sprained ankle — when to apply?
After acute icing phase (first 24h), apply Murivenna 2–3× daily. Reduces swelling and accelerates recovery significantly.
Safe for children?
Yes for sports injuries, bruises, minor sprains in children over 5. Younger children — use simpler oils.
Murivenna vs Mahanarayan?
Murivenna = acute trauma/sprain. Mahanarayan = chronic osteoarthritis / nerve pain. Different indications.
Does it replace X-rays for fractures?
No. Always rule out fracture with imaging first. Murivenna is adjunct for soft-tissue component of the injury.
